Trompettiste au parcours bigarr\u00e9, ce musicien est apparu dans les mouvements d\u2019avant-garde de New York du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1960. Comme accompagnateur, il a fait partie du sextette du compositeur George Russell pour ensuite travailler en trio avec Paul Bley. Au milieu de cette m\u00eame d\u00e9cennie, il se lance dans l\u2019aventure des grands orchestres en s\u2019installant \u00e0 Los Angeles. Apr\u00e8s avoir explor\u00e9 les m\u00e9triques compos\u00e9es (7\/4, 11\/8, etc.), il appr\u00eate sa musique au rock psych\u00e9d\u00e9lique. Au moment de sa mort pr\u00e9matur\u00e9e en 1978, Ellis composait sans rel\u00e2che pour les studios hollywoodiens. Il n\u2019avait que 44 ans. Oubli\u00e9 de nos jours, ce thurif\u00e9raire du jazz orchestral moderne m\u00e9rite une red\u00e9couverte. Telle est l\u2019intention des deux soir\u00e9es qui se tiendront sous la direction de Philippe Keyser les 18 et 19 mars prochains \u00e0 la Sala Rossa.<\/p>\n<p>Jadis directeur de la formation Kappa au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es\u00a02000 et enseignant \u00e0 la retraite du c\u00e9gep Saint-Laurent, Keyser avait rassembl\u00e9 une troupe de jeunes en 2017 pour revisiter la musique de l\u2019Infonie en soir\u00e9e d\u2019ouverture du festival Suoni per il Popolo. Le 19 d\u00e9cembre dernier, il revenait \u00e0 la charge avec une autre soir\u00e9e atypique, en l\u2019occurrence un programme d\u2019\u0153uvres du r\u00e9pertoire de Stan Kenton, en particulier les pi\u00e8ces de son arrangeur le plus audacieux Bob Graettinger, auteur de l\u2019incomparable <em>City of Glass<\/em>. En sus, l\u2019ensemble d\u2019une vingtaine de jeunes a repris trois morceaux \u00e9crits pour l\u2019orchestre d\u2019Ellis des ann\u00e9es\u00a01970, ravivant l\u2019\u00e9tincelle de folie des originaux.
