21C Music Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jan. 16 to 20, 2019<\/p>\n

Toronto\u2019s Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) has moved its 21C Music Festival from May to January. \u201cThe new time-period allows us to fill a space in Toronto\u2019s cultural calendar and allows the students of The Glenn Gould School to participate more fully than ever before,\u201d says Mervon Mehta, executive director of performing arts at\u00a0the RCM.<\/p>\n

The sixth edition celebrates the American minimalist Terry Riley in three concerts, including one that he will headline, titled\u00a0Terry Riley: Live at 85!<\/em>\u00a0\u201cRiley has been a seminal composer and player in the contemporary music scene for decades and has influenced countless composers across many genres of music,\u201d says Mehta.<\/p>\n

Other highlights include the\u00a0Toronto Symphony Orchestra debut at the 21C Music Festival in a program that includes two world premieres (by Emilie LeBel\u00a0and Stewart Goodyear), one Canadian premiere (Riley), and three Ontario premieres (Dorothy Chang,\u00a0Dinuk Wijeratne, Jocelyn Morlock), conducted by Canadian conductors\u00a0Tania Miller\u00a0and\u00a0Simon Rivard. Pianist Goodyear\u00a0appears first with the TSO in the world premiere of his own piano concerto, titled Ur-<\/em>, and then as a singer and pianist in a program of his own compositions and covers of rock songs. The percussion quartet\u00a0S\u014d\u00a0Percussion performs a program titled\u00a0Amid the Noise<\/em> consisting of Canadian premieres by celebrated jazz pianist\u00a0Vijay Iyer as well as Caroline Shaw,\u00a0Donnacha Dennehy, and\u00a0Jason Treuting.<\/p>\n

The festival welcomes back Continuum\u00a0with a\u00a021C AfterHours\u00a0concert, featuring\u00a0Wesley Shen\u00a0on harpsichord and piano with the renowned\u00a0Continuum Ensemble, performing one world (Monica Pearce) and two Canadian premieres (Carolyn Chen\u00a0and\u00a0Kati\u00a0Ag\u00f3cs). The Esprit Orchestra Presents\u00a0Constellations<\/em>, which includes a world premiere (Christopher Goddard) and a Canadian premiere\u00a0(Toshio Hosokawa), conducted by\u00a0Alex Pauk\u00a0and featuring virtuoso saxophonist\u00a0Wallace Hallady. www.rcmusic.ca<\/a><\/p>\n

Brahms and the Art of Film<\/strong><\/p>\n

Feb. 7 to 10, 2019<\/p>\n

Kent Nagano leads the OSM in a cycle of Brahms Symphonies with a twist: four silent films and four commission works to accompany them. \u201cThat whole technology, and using the light bulb in an artistic way, was developing during the mature years of Brahms\u2019s life,\u201d Nagano has explained. The cycle, running over four days from Feb. 7 to 10 at Maison symphonique, also offers classical concertos, including Veronika Eberle in Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s Violin Concerto and Rudolf Buchminder in Beethoven\u2019s Piano Conceto No. 4. www.osm.ca<\/a><\/p>\n
