The 41st annual TIFF kicks off this month with 296 full-length features and 101 shorts; numbers increasing in tandem with the reputation of the festival. On the must-see list: Antoine Fuqua\u2019s The Magnificent Seven<\/i> with Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke; Andrea Arnold\u2019s American Honey<\/i> with Shia LaBeouf and up-and-coming actress Sasha Lane; Ewan McGregor\u2019s directorial debut with American Pastoral<\/i>; and Anatomy of Violence<\/i>, a film about the rape of a 23-year-old student in India directed by Toronto\u2019s own Deepa Mehta. Les Escales Improbables <\/b>reinvents itself once again to shake up reality with a forecast that calls for fun. The public is invited to join the D\u00e9ambulatoire<\/i>, a strolling convoy of 40 artists, including the French company Kumulus, the flashmob Sugar Pop, and Ballet de ruelles. On the stage you can see Fantaisie au soleil couchant ou les petits animaux en pot<\/i>, a tragicomic carte-blance fable within a fable by Montr\u00e9al artists Denis Lavalou, Alexis O\u2019Hara and Richard Simas. Parc des Faubourgs in Ville-Marie will host two temporary installations: Bercer le temps<\/i>, rocking chairs with ambient noises, and Le temps d\u2019une soupe<\/i>, a three-course dialogue among strangers about living together. About Kurdish female fighters in the war on ISIS in Iraq and Syria, Gul\u00eestan, Land of Roses<\/i> is the first feature film by Zayn\u00ea Akyol, a Quebec-based Kurdish-Canadian. Robert Greene\u2019s psychological thriller Kate Plays Christine<\/i> won a Special Jury Award for writing at Sundance earlier this year, while Brazilian Eryk Rocha\u2019s Cinema Novo<\/i>, about the intellectual film movement in 1960s and \u201870s Brazil, won for best documentary at Cannes. Chinese filmmaker Wang Bing\u2019s Ta\u2019ang<\/i> is a portrait of the refugee Ta\u2019ang people.
