Originaire de Hong Kong, elle a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 la musique au Royaume-Uni et en Allemagne avant de s\u2019installer \u00e0 Toronto. \u00c0 propos de cette rencontre entre la musique chinoise traditionnelle qui a berc\u00e9 son enfance et son \u00e9ducation en musique classique occidentale, elle affirme que sa \u00ab capacit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9coute et de cr\u00e9ation en a \u00e9t\u00e9 fa\u00e7onn\u00e9e \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Sa formation en Europe l\u2019aide \u00e0 composer de fa\u00e7on logique, presque math\u00e9matique, alors que les influences de sa culture d\u2019origine l\u2019encouragent \u00e0 envisager l\u2019impact \u00e9motionnel d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce et parfois \u00e0 s\u2019\u00e9loigner de ce qui peut \u00eatre la progression la plus \u00ab\u00a0logique\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Son nouvel album <em>The Imagined<\/em>, avec la pianiste Christina Petrowska Quilico, pr\u00e9sente des \u0153uvres complexes sur le plan technique qui refl\u00e8tent \u00ab\u00a0son v\u00e9cu et son esprit\u00a0\u00bb autant que ceux de ses collaborateurs. Photo : Cathy Ord<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Une touche personnelle<\/h4>\n<p>Compos\u00e9 par Ho au cours des quatre derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es,<em> The Imagined <\/em>rassemble quatre \u0153uvres pour piano seul, dont trois ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crites pour des pianistes d\u2019origine chinoise : Tong Wang, Han Chen and Philip Chiu. \u00ab Cet album me tient particuli\u00e8rement \u00e0 c\u0153ur \u00bb, dit-elle, \u00e9voquant l\u2019entrecroisement des influences est-asiatiques et des traditions occidentales qui le traversent.<\/p>\n<p>Dans l\u2019avant-derni\u00e8re pi\u00e8ce,<em> The Chinese Nightingale<\/em>, inspir\u00e9e d\u2019un conte chinois qui met en sc\u00e8ne un rossignol magique voyageant dans le temps, Ho marie ses deux mondes en plus d\u2019inspirations r\u00e9elles et imagin\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Command\u00e9e par la M\u00fczewest Concerts Society de Vancouver, cette \u0153uvre pour piano seul et instruments \u00e9lectroniques fait appel \u00e0 une combinaison de vieilles chansons populaires modifi\u00e9es et de voix humaines qu\u2019elle a fusionn\u00e9es avec de multiples couches de sons synth\u00e9tiques. En parall\u00e8le, elle exige du piano une fonction ou un son diff\u00e9rent. Ce morceau \u00ab\u00a0est un d\u00e9fi pour le pianiste parce que [le piano]imite en quelque sorte un instrument chinois, le pipa, explique-t-elle. Le tr\u00e9molo est une technique traditionnelle de cet instrument. Son effet est tr\u00e8s dramatique \u2013 parfois tr\u00e8s angoissant, parfois tr\u00e8s romantique \u2013 et je voulais le reproduire.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Ho cr\u00e9e ainsi un univers sonore unique qui, enrichi par les sons d\u2019instruments anciens, illustre le cheminement de l\u2019oiseau mystique et rappelle un espace familier et imaginaire qui ne peut \u00eatre visit\u00e9 qu\u2019\u00e0 cet instant.<\/p>\n<h4>Trouver sa voix<\/h4>\n<p>Maintenant bien \u00e9tablie, Ho a mis des ann\u00e9es \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper son style. Aux artistes \u00e9mergents, elle conseille d\u2019\u00ab\u00a0utiliser leur propre culture comme source d\u2019inspiration et de force. Et aussi de faire preuve de curiosit\u00e9, d\u2019ouverture d\u2019esprit\u2026 parce que trouver sa voix exige beaucoup de patience.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Souvent, on attend des artistes issus d\u2019une culture ou d\u2019un parcours particulier qu\u2019ils jouent le r\u00f4le de porte-parole \u2013 une seule personne qui repr\u00e9sente et d\u00e9fend les exp\u00e9riences de tout un groupe.
