En lisant que Weill la consid\u00e9rait comme \u00ab riche en possibilit\u00e9s pour le th\u00e9\u00e2tre non r\u00e9aliste \u00bb, j&#8217;annule tous mes appels.<\/p>\n<p>Weill et le librettiste Alan Jay Lerner avaient eu l&#8217;id\u00e9e de retracer l&#8217;\u00e9volution du mariage et de la vie professionnelle aux \u00c9tats-Unis de 1791 \u00e0 1948, un projet bien trop ambitieux pour Broadway. Le spectacle a ferm\u00e9 ses portes apr\u00e8s seulement sept mois et n&#8217;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 repris pendant sept d\u00e9cennies, jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 une reprise allemande en 2017 et la mise en sc\u00e8ne actuelle sous forme de concert \u00e0 Leeds au d\u00e9but de cette ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p><em>Love Life<\/em> avait beaucoup d&#8217;obstacles \u00e0 surmonter : un num\u00e9ro sensationnel intitul\u00e9 \u00ab Economics \u00bb dans le premier acte, un madrigal anglais en lever de rideau, sans parler d&#8217;un ballet sur le divorce qui dansait \u00e0 la limite du r\u00eave am\u00e9ricain. La somme de ses 47 parties diff\u00e9rentes a empoisonn\u00e9 la reprise, et l&#8217;embauche d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9e d&#8217;Elia Kazan comme metteur en sc\u00e8ne, alors qu&#8217;il avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 deux autres spectacles en cours, n&#8217;a rendu service \u00e0 personne. Weill est mort 18 mois plus tard, Lerner a cr\u00e9\u00e9 My Fair Lady<em>\u00a0<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Opera North a fait appel \u00e0 un orchestre de qualit\u00e9 Mozart pour la reprise de l&#8217;\u0153uvre, traitant la partition comme la suite de <em>Street Scene<\/em>, un succ\u00e8s mitig\u00e9 de Weill. James Holmes dirige bien malgr\u00e9 quelques irr\u00e9gularit\u00e9s et certaines arias sont vraiment \u00e9mouvantes. \u00ab Is It him Or Is It Me? \u00bb est un morceau de choix de Weill, \u00e0 l&#8217;instar de \u00ab I&#8217;m a Stranger Here Myself \u00bb, mais avec une touche de cynisme suppl\u00e9mentaire. Stephanie Corley et Quirin de Lang donnent tout ce qu&#8217;ils ont dans des r\u00f4les principaux qui manquent de caract\u00e8re. C&#8217;est Berlin qui rencontre Brooklyn sur une planche \u00e0 dessin qui ne trouve jamais son \u00e9quilibre.<\/p>\n<p>Cela dit, <em>Love Life<\/em> est essentiel. Stephen Sondheim l&#8217;a qualifi\u00e9 d&#8217;\u00ab utile \u00bb, ce qui est un euph\u00e9misme. L&#8217;oeuvre a \u00e9t\u00e9 fondamentale pour Sondheim. Sans elle, il n&#8217;y aurait pas eu \u00ab Company \u00bb, \u00ab Merrily \u00bb ou \u00ab Pacific Overtures \u00bb. C&#8217;est le d\u00e9but de quelque chose de nouveau. Opera North m\u00e9rite un Tony pour cette r\u00e9alisation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Traduction : A.
