Fille du violoncelle solo de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra de Paris, elle a fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 la m\u00eame classe de Conservatoire qu\u2019Olivier Messiaen et a remport\u00e9 le prestigieux Prix de Rome. Sa premi\u00e8re symphonie est de 1931, la seconde de 1938. Barraine a rejoint le parti communiste \u00e0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1930 et la R\u00e9sistance pendant l\u2019occupation allemande. Apr\u00e8s la guerre, elle a enseign\u00e9 au Conservatoire, a \u00e9t\u00e9 inspectrice au minist\u00e8re de la Culture et a \u00e9crit des musiques \u00e0 la gloire du Vi\u00eat Nam et du 1er mai. Intrigu\u00e9s ? Des \u00e9lans pleins d\u2019assurance pour les cuivres, des moments de fantaisie pour le hautbois et pas trop d\u2019arr\u00eats sur un seul th\u00e8me. Le langage est davantage celui de Mahler que de Messiaen, avec des relents de Wagner et de Magnard. J\u2019ai eu beau essayer, je n\u2019ai pas trouv\u00e9 de voix qui s\u2019affirme comme \u00e9tant proprement celle de Barraine. Seul le finale, avec son insouciance, sugg\u00e8re que la compositrice est une Parisienne aux propensions ludiques, peut-\u00eatre un clin d\u2019\u0153il \u00e0 son professeur Paul Dukas.<\/p>\n<p>La premi\u00e8re symphonie, de vingt-cinq minutes, n\u2019est pas tout \u00e0 fait \u00e0 point. Le morceau que j\u2019ai vraiment aim\u00e9 sur ce disque est une r\u00e9flexion fun\u00e8bre de 1953 sur le tombeau du Titien, qui s\u2019ouvre sur un <em>dies irae<\/em> au piano solo et se d\u00e9veloppe dans des directions inattendues. L\u2019Orchestre symphonique de la WDR de Cologne joue solidement sous la direction d\u2019Elena Schwarz. On peut se demander pourquoi aucun orchestre fran\u00e7ais bien financ\u00e9 n\u2019a tent\u00e9 l\u2019exp\u00e9rience avant.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019aimerais en entendre davantage d\u2019Elsa Barraine, mais il est absurde de la d\u00e9crire comme \u00ab l\u2019une des compositrices les plus importantes du 20<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle \u00bb. Barraine \u00e9tait, et reste, une compositrice \u00e0 la recherche d\u2019une voix.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Traduction : A.
