Le disque comprend dix chansons du spectacle accompagn\u00e9es de pi\u00e8ces pour piano tir\u00e9es de la <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mata Hari Suite <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de Burge. Burge est au piano avec <a href=\"https:\/\/sdm.queensu.ca\/people\/ocallaghan-patricia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patricia O&#8217;Callaghan<\/a>, chanteuse torontoise multigenre, dans le r\u00f4le de Mata Hari.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mata Hari, la veille de son ex\u00e9cution, raconte sa vie et son parcours\u00a0: ma\u00eetresse d&#8217;un officier brutal, danseuse exotique et dominatrice \u00e0 Paris, vamp vieillissante prise dans un scandale d&#8217;espionnage qui la d\u00e9passe largement. En fin de compte, elle devient la victime sacrificielle d&#8217;un stratag\u00e8me officiel visant \u00e0 dissimuler les manquements (ou pire) des services de renseignement militaire fran\u00e7ais. Il est clair que sa carri\u00e8re s&#8217;est construite sur un orientalisme hautement sexualis\u00e9 destin\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9moustiller les palais fran\u00e7ais plut\u00f4t que sur une id\u00e9e pr\u00e9cise de la vie en Orient. En plus de l&#8217;appropriation culturelle, il y a beaucoup plus de sadomasochisme que ce \u00e0 quoi je m&#8217;attendais\u00a0! Dans l&#8217;ensemble, il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;un r\u00e9cit condens\u00e9, mais bien construit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musicalement, c&#8217;est plut\u00f4t riche. Le style, ancr\u00e9 davantage dans Broadway que dans les cabarets europ\u00e9ens, est assez doux. On a l&#8217;impression que Brecht et Weill auraient abord\u00e9 ce sujet avec beaucoup plus de mordant. Cela dit, la musique n&#8217;est pas insipide. Des clins d&#8217;\u0153il \u00e0 l&#8217;impressionnisme fran\u00e7ais, au romantisme allemand tardif et m\u00eame \u00e0 l&#8217;atonalisme maintiennent l&#8217;int\u00e9r\u00eat, tout comme les \u00e9l\u00e9ments parodiques de tambour et de bugle de la premi\u00e8re chanson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burge est un pianiste tr\u00e8s accompli et joue avec un flair consid\u00e9rable. Il est \u00e9galement un bon accompagnateur et laisse \u00e0 O&#8217;Callaghan l&#8217;espace n\u00e9cessaire pour exprimer toute une gamme d&#8217;\u00e9motions. Elle est vraiment tr\u00e8s \u00e9l\u00e9gante et comp\u00e9tente dans ce style de r\u00e9cit musical. Le r\u00e9sultat est un th\u00e9\u00e2tre musical int\u00e9ressant et agr\u00e9able d&#8217;une cinquantaine de minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019enregistrement jouit d\u2019une acoustique claire avec un \u00e9quilibre voix\/piano naturel. Tout le texte est clairement audible. Il est offert sur disque ou en version num\u00e9rique, mais il n&#8217;y a pas de livret.
