Il est ce qu&#8217;il est, avec ses avantages. L&#8217;alto vous \u00e9pargne les irritations grin\u00e7antes d&#8217;un violon et les grognements lugubres d&#8217;un violoncelle malmen\u00e9. J&#8217;aime l&#8217;alto. Voil\u00e0, c\u2019est dit.<\/p>\n<p>Ce qui fait la particularit\u00e9 de ce disque, c&#8217;est le menu \u00e9clectique \u00e9labor\u00e9 par un jeune Jama\u00efcain-Am\u00e9ricain, Jordan Bak, qui a manifestement le vent en poupe. Bak commence par un chant de Jonathan Harvey, d&#8217;une dur\u00e9e de trois minutes, qui oscille entre contemplation tonale et post-tonale. Une romance de Ralph Vaughan Williams, d\u00e9couverte dans des documents posthumes, est exactement ce dont j&#8217;ai besoin en ces temps tumultueux.<\/p>\n<p>Bright Sheng r\u00e9imagine un chant populaire de Chine du Sud qui raconte l&#8217;histoire d&#8217;une femme qui s&#8217;ennuie de son amant au clair de lune. Le morceau,<em>The Stream Flows<\/em>, est tr\u00e8s imag\u00e9. Augusta Read Thomas a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 plusieurs versions alternatives de son succ\u00e8s 2018 <em>Song Without Words<\/em>. La sonate pour alto d&#8217;Arnold Bax, de 1922, est massivement m\u00e9lodieuse, ondulant avec des airs qui semblent \u00e0 moiti\u00e9 m\u00e9moris\u00e9s et qui pourraient m\u00eame \u00eatre originaux. Imaginez Copland et Holst se promenant \u00e0 la campagne. Le final est tr\u00e8s satisfaisant.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lachrymae\u00a0: Reflections on a song of Dowland<\/em> de Benjamin Britten est une \u0153uvre \u00e0 la fois trompeuse et r\u00e9v\u00e9latrice. Britten n&#8217;utilise que la premi\u00e8re phrase de la chanson de Dowland, mais il s&#8217;impr\u00e8gne tellement de la vision doloriste du compositeur des Tudor que les deux compositeurs se sentent comme des fr\u00e8res \u00e0 travers deux \u00e9poques \u00e9lisab\u00e9thaines. Bak est suffisamment comp\u00e9tent pour ma\u00eetriser la situation, et m\u00eame plus. Son pianiste, Richard Uttley, fait preuve d&#8217;une empathie audacieuse.
