Juif tch\u00e8que dans l&#8217;Allemagne hitl\u00e9rienne, Kaufmann a \u00e9t\u00e9 engag\u00e9 comme compositeur par un ami indien qui \u00e9tait en train de fonder une compagnie de cin\u00e9ma \u00e0 Bombay. Rapidement, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 promu responsable de la musique \u00e0 All India Radio, a cofond\u00e9 (avec Meli Mehta) la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de musique de chambre de Bombay et a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 donner des cours \u00e0 l&#8217;universit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">La girouette politique ayant tourn\u00e9, il \u00e9migre \u00e0 Londres en 1946, o\u00f9 il composera pour Arthur Rank Films. Il devint ensuite le premier directeur musical de Winnipeg, au Manitoba, et enseignera en 1957 \u00e0 Bloomington, Indiana, o\u00f9 il est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en 1984. Comprenez-vous pourquoi vous n&#8217;avez jamais entendu parler de lui ? Aucune de ses \u0153uvres musicales n&#8217;a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Et la musique, demandez-vous ? \u00c9tonnamment captivante. Ces premiers enregistrements de l&#8217;orchestre symphonique de la radio de Berlin, sous la direction de David Robert Coleman, d\u00e9bordent d&#8217;\u00e9nergies frustr\u00e9es et d&#8217;influences flamboyantes. Le concerto (soliste Elisaveta Blumina) doit beaucoup \u00e0 <span class=\"kY2IgmnCmOGjharHErah\"> K\u0159enek<\/span>, Stravinsky et Gershwin \u2013 c&#8217;est-\u00e0-dire qu&#8217;on ne s&#8217;ennuie pas.<\/p>\n<p>La <em>Symphonie no 3<\/em> de 1936 et une symphonie indienne de 1943 oscillent entre la forme sonate de Haydn et les matin\u00e9es Bollywood, sans jamais l\u00e9siner sur le charme et les bizarreries instrumentales. Six miniatures indiennes (1965) sont des cartes postales musicales, r\u00e9alis\u00e9es avec tact et affection.<\/p>\n<p>En plus d&#8217;\u00eatre bien entour\u00e9 \u2013 ami d&#8217;Albert Einstein, assistant chef de Bruno Walter et \u00e9poux de la ni\u00e8ce de Franz Kafka \u2013, Kaufmann n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas un minable sans talent. Il a m\u00eame donn\u00e9 des le\u00e7ons \u00e0 un gar\u00e7on nomm\u00e9 Zubin Mehta. Si ses voyages avaient pris une autre tournure, il aurait pu gagner des Oscars.
