Originaire de Victoria, en Colombie britannique, l\u2019ensemble lui a rendu hommage notamment en 2011 et 2014 avec les cr\u00e9ations de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stories from Klee Wyck<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> et <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feathers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> de Tobin Stokes. Depuis, d\u2019autres \u0153uvres de compositeurs de l\u2019ouest canadien, elles aussi inspir\u00e9es par l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019Emily Carr, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 le fruit d\u2019une commande. C\u2019est le cas de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Raven<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> de Jocelyn Morlock, en 2015, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strangled by Growth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> de Jared Miller, en 2016. Malgr\u00e9 tous les m\u00e9rites de ces musiques, l\u2019exp\u00e9rience auditive reste souvent aride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1057872 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/images-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/images-1.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/images-1-100x100.jpeg 100w, https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/images-1-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avec son utilisation de la voix parl\u00e9e, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feathers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nous confronte \u00e0 une approche plus th\u00e9\u00e2tralis\u00e9e, dramatique, que proprement musicale \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de l\u2019\u0153uvre de l\u2019artiste-peintre (en l\u2019occurrence, des propos rapport\u00e9s dans ses journaux, carnets de dessins et dans la biographie d\u2019Anne Newlands dat\u00e9e de 1996). La bri\u00e8vet\u00e9 de chacune des 9 pi\u00e8ces du cycle, hormis <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanitorium<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ne nous permet pas de nous abandonner \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9coute. Il faut attendre <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Raven<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pour \u00eatre transport\u00e9 dans de plus grands espaces, bien que les <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pizzicatos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nous ram\u00e8nent \u00e0 quelque chose de tr\u00e8s intime, de l\u2019ordre d\u2019une angoisse lancinante. Dans <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strangled by Growth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on ne peut pas s\u2019emp\u00eacher de penser que<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">les effets de cordes grinc\u00e9es \u2013 ou effleur\u00e9s pour faire ressortir les harmoniques \u2013 se pr\u00eatent mieux au contexte d\u2019un concert, avec une acoustique appropri\u00e9e, que sur disque. L\u2019allure dansante de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beloved of the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sa richesse de sonorit\u00e9s et ses lignes m\u00e9lodiques \u00e9tir\u00e9es rendent cette \u0153uvre particuli\u00e8rement attrayante. Le dernier cycle, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stories from Klee Wyck<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, souffre du m\u00eame \u00e9cueil que <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feathers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u00e0 savoir de reposer essentiellement sur un texte qu\u2019il convient de lire au pr\u00e9alable ou lors de l\u2019audition pour mieux saisir le sens de la musique sans paroles.
