Ils datent de ses vingt ans et trahissent les traces viennoises \u2212 en particulier la tonalit\u00e9 limite, la surcharge \u00e9motionnelle d&#8217;Alban Berg et les grandes d\u00e9clarations de Gustav Mahler. Il y a deux concertos pour piano, un pour la main gauche, un pour le violon et un double concerto achev\u00e9 \u00e0 titre posthume. Les orchestres londoniens passent des ann\u00e9es sans les mettre au programme, ce qui est symptomatique d&#8217;une profonde frilosit\u00e9 anglaise.<\/p>\n<p>Le concerto pour violon date de 1938-1939 et a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 par le soliste espagnol Antonio Brosa apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9sistement de Jascha Heifetz. L&#8217;orchestre \u00e9tait le <a href=\"https:\/\/myscena.org\/newswire\/lincoln-center-and-new-york-philharmonic-accelerate-david-geffen-hall-reimagination\/\"><strong>New York Philharmonic<\/strong><\/a>, dirig\u00e9 par John Barbirolli. Le concerto porte le fardeau du monde de 1940 sur des \u00e9paules trop \u00e9troites. Un premier cliquetis de timbales laisse entrevoir un monde \u00e0 la veille de la destruction, une angoisse qui s&#8217;accentue dans le deuxi\u00e8me mouvement qui fait pratiquement couler le sang des cuticules du soliste.<\/p>\n<p>On retient le gros morceau pour le finale, o\u00f9 la trag\u00e9die mahl\u00e9rienne prend le dessus, ainsi que les \u00e9chos de <em>Peter Grimes<\/em>, l&#8217;op\u00e9ra de Britten qui a marqu\u00e9 les esprits. Le concerto n&#8217;a pas connu un succ\u00e8s imm\u00e9diat et a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9vis\u00e9 trois fois par Britten \u2212 1950, 1954 et 1965 \u2212 avant qu&#8217;il soit finalement satisfait. Il confia \u00e0 l&#8217;un de ses amis qu&#8217;il avait vis\u00e9 trop haut. Cependant, ce concerto a bien vieilli \u2212 mieux, \u00e0 mon avis, que celui de William Walton \u2212 et la violoniste lettonne <a href=\"https:\/\/myscena.org\/fr\/norman-lebrecht\/lhebdo-lebrecht-erwin-schulhoff-violin-sonatas-orfeo-fhr\/\"><strong>Baiba Skride<\/strong> <\/a>lui conf\u00e8re une profondeur de sentiment et une largeur de champ. Ce concerto serait tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 aux BBC Proms.<\/p>\n<p>Le double concerto pour violon et alto de Britten (1932) a \u00e9t\u00e9 exhum\u00e9 et compl\u00e9t\u00e9 en 1997 par le compositeur Colin Matthews. Il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;une \u0153uvre tout \u00e0 fait engageante, assembl\u00e9e avec comp\u00e9tence, m\u00eame si elle manque un peu de vision. L&#8217;impeccable altiste Ivan Vukcevic rejoint Skride avec l&#8217;orchestre de la Radio de Vienne, sous la direction de Marin Alsop. Le ton viennois est \u00e9vident, voire exag\u00e9r\u00e9. \u00c0 premi\u00e8re vue, on ne penserait pas qu&#8217;il s&#8217;agit de l&#8217;\u0153uvre d&#8217;un compositeur anglais.
