{"id":1052220,"date":"2024-02-02T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T14:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myscena.org\/?p=1052220"},"modified":"2024-02-02T09:02:13","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T14:02:13","slug":"critique-de-livre-statesman-of-the-piano-jazz-race-and-history-in-the-life-of-lou-hooper-mcgill-queens-university-press-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myscena.org\/fr\/felix-antoine-hamel\/critique-de-livre-statesman-of-the-piano-jazz-race-and-history-in-the-life-of-lou-hooper-mcgill-queens-university-press-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Critique de livre | Statesman of the Piano: Jazz, Race, and History in the Life of Lou Hooper (McGill-Queen\u2019s University Press, 2023)"},"content":{"rendered":"&#013;\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap has-medium-font-size\">Paru en septembre dernier, <i>Statesman of the Piano <\/i>permet de d\u00e9couvrir l\u2019autobiographie du pianiste Lou Hooper (1894-1977), intitul\u00e9e <i>That Happy Road<\/i>, un texte pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment conserv\u00e9 \u00e0 la BAC (Biblioth\u00e8que et Archives Canada) au sein d\u2019un fonds \u00e0 son nom.<\/p>&#013;\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1052215 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Hooperlivre-cmyk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Hooperlivre-cmyk.jpg 397w, https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Hooperlivre-cmyk-300x435.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myscena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Hooperlivre-cmyk-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 184px) 100vw, 184px\" \/>Afro-Canadien, n\u00e9 en Ontario, mais ayant grandi au Michigan, Louis Stanley Hooper raconte sa travers\u00e9e du si\u00e8cle avec dignit\u00e9 et humour, malgr\u00e9 les \u00e9v\u00e9nements parfois durs ou tragiques auxquels il a fait face : le racisme, bien s\u00fbr, mais aussi les deux guerres mondiales, dont il a \u00e9t\u00e9 un acteur (la premi\u00e8re dans l\u2019arm\u00e9e am\u00e9ricaine, la seconde au sein du Canadian Army Show, qui divertissait les troupes d\u00e9ploy\u00e9es en Europe). Le plus gros de son r\u00e9cit est d\u2019ailleurs consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 son passage dans l\u2019arm\u00e9e pendant le conflit de 1939-45, ce qu\u2019on comprend bien entendu.<\/p>\n<p>Les amateurs de jazz seront cependant plus int\u00e9ress\u00e9s par les pages qu\u2019il d\u00e9die au Harlem des ann\u00e9es 1920 (l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 de nombreux accompagnements de chansons et autres enregistrements de pi\u00e8ces instrumentales, souvent avec le clarinettiste Bob Fuller et le banjo\u00efste Elmer Snowden, sous le nom des Three Jolly Miners, Choo Choo Jazzers ou autres) ou par sa description du Montr\u00e9al de la grande \u00e9poque des cabarets qu\u2019il a fr\u00e9quent\u00e9s avec les fameux Canadian Ambassadors du saxophoniste Myron Sutton dans les ann\u00e9es 1930.<\/p>\n<p>Le texte de Hooper arr\u00eate en 1953, avant sa red\u00e9couverte par un petit groupe de discophiles montr\u00e9alais dans les ann\u00e9es 1960.
