Les ann\u00e9es vingt sont une p\u00e9riode d&#8217;\u00e9vasion et d&#8217;amn\u00e9sie\u00a0: quoi que vous fassiez, ne mentionnez surtout pas la guerre. Coward \u00e9tait le ma\u00eetre de la superficialit\u00e9, le dramaturge et l&#8217;auteur-compositeur des relations vou\u00e9es \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9chec et de la solitude existentielle envelopp\u00e9e de p\u00e2te d\u2019amande. Coward n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas le seul \u00e0 \u00eatre lass\u00e9 du monde, il \u00e9tait simplement meilleur que les autres.<\/p>\n<p>La s\u00e9lection de chansons par la soprano Mery Bevan et le t\u00e9nor Nicky Spence, avec l&#8217;accompagnement chatoyant du pianiste Joseph Middleton, \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re de Jeeves, r\u00e9unit un certain nombre de compositeurs qui sont bien en dehors de l&#8217;\u00e9poque, mais quand m\u00eame dans l&#8217;air du temps. Benjamin Britten et William Walton appartiennent \u00e0 peine \u00e0 cette \u00e9quipe et Ned Rorem n&#8217;a pu s&#8217;y glisser que parce que ses attitudes refl\u00e9taient si \u00e9troitement celles de Coward. Francis Poulenc est parfait, tout comme l\u2019Anglais sournois Roger Quilter. Tous sont mis en valeur par une paire de chanteurs d&#8217;op\u00e9ra qui s&#8217;amusent comme des fous, et vous invitent cordialement.<\/p>\n<p>J&#8217;ai ador\u00e9 leur interpr\u00e9tation de l&#8217;ode \u00e0 la Seine de Kurt Weill et la mise en musique par Rorem de <em>Now sleeps the crimson petal<\/em>, tellement plus cynique que le kitsch de Quilter. <em>When you&#8217;re feeling like expressing your affection<\/em> de Britten est le chant enflamm\u00e9 d&#8217;un homme exceptionnellement timide. \u00ab\u00a0La f\u00eate est finie maintenant\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9clare Coward. Mais il sait que c&#8217;est faux, et nous aussi. Rien ici ne peut \u00eatre pris au s\u00e9rieux, et je m&#8217;en r\u00e9jouis.
