Form\u00e9 de Bryan et Silvie Cheng, fr\u00e8re et s\u0153ur dans la vraie vie, il vient de sortir un nouvel album paru chez Centredisques, le plus personnel de toute sa discographie et intitul\u00e9 <i>Portrait<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Nous sommes accueillis aux sons envo\u00fbtants de <i>Portait of an Imaginery Sibling<\/i>, du compositeur ontarien Dinuk Wijeratne. Les gammes hypnotiques du piano nous plongent d\u2019embl\u00e9e dans une atmosph\u00e8re mystique, avant que le violoncelle entame un solo a\u00e9rien. Une section plus rythmique donne lieu \u00e0 un dialogue \u00e9nergique entre les instruments qui rappelle la musique sensuelle de Piazzolla.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9coute se poursuit avec un cycle de 3 morceaux de Vincent Ho, <i>Horizon Images<\/i>. Le caract\u00e8re planant du violoncelle, dans le registre suraigu, s\u2019allie aux arp\u00e8ges vaporeux du piano pour cr\u00e9er une impression d\u2019espace infini.<\/p>\n<p>On peut dire que l\u2019album a les qualit\u00e9s de ses d\u00e9fauts. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la sixi\u00e8me pi\u00e8ce, il contient une tr\u00e8s grande homog\u00e9n\u00e9it\u00e9 de sonorit\u00e9s m\u00e9ditatives, \u00e9vocatrices de contr\u00e9es lointaines comme <i>Moon\u2019s Reflection upon a Spring <\/i>du musicien chinois <i>Hua Yanjun<\/i>, dit Abing (1893-1950), mais ces musiques tendent \u00e0 se ressembler. <i>Wild Horse Running <\/i>d\u2019Alexina Louie offre un peu plus de contrastes avec ses dissonances, sa vari\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019effets et la virtuosit\u00e9 requise, particuli\u00e8rement au violoncelle.
