Ce n\u2019est pas le cas cependant pour l\u2019album <i>Under a Veil of Stars<\/i> du compositeur Kevin Lau, dont les mots d\u00e9crivent tr\u00e8s justement comme une intime et cosmique \u00ab\u00a0musique accueillante avec une douce familiarit\u00e9 qui vous enveloppe tout en embarquant dans une d\u00e9couverte de l\u2019univers lui-m\u00eame\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Les quatre trios avec piano du compositeur canadien originaire de Hong Kong sont merveilleusement interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par le St. John-Mercer-Park Trio (Scott St. John, Rachel Mercer et Angela Park). L\u2019ouverture du premier mouvement,<i> The Stars are Never Still,<\/i> d\u00e9montre un jeu souple et limpide au piano et d\u2019exquises et vives sonorit\u00e9s dans les cordes. L\u2019\u00e9criture fluide de Lau \u00e9voque des espaces color\u00e9s et des textures vari\u00e9es. Des airs de musique espagnole et modale, combin\u00e9s \u00e0 des \u00e9chos des r\u00e9pertoires classique et populaire, am\u00e8nent des accents int\u00e9ressants, rappelant l\u2019esprit de la na\u00efvet\u00e9 am\u00e9ricaine (d\u00e9riv\u00e9e d\u2019Aaron Copland).<\/p>\n<p>Le deuxi\u00e8me mouvement, <i>Land of Poison Trees<\/i>, refl\u00e8te, dans ses motifs rythmiques et m\u00e9lodiques r\u00e9p\u00e9titifs, la cacophonie de la vie moderne. Les harmonies consonantes sont agr\u00e9ables \u00e0 \u00e9couter et l\u2019excellent jeu du trio exprime la musique de Lau avec tendresse et chaleur. \u00c0 l\u2019oppos\u00e9, le troisi\u00e8me mouvement, <i>In That Shoreless Ocean<\/i>, cr\u00e9e une atmosph\u00e8re de r\u00e9signation\u00a0: la fin d\u2019une vie courte et remplie pour ce magnifique trio avec piano.<\/p>\n<p>Jou\u00e9 par Angela Park, <i>The Dreamer<\/i>, pour piano seul, prend son mouvement d\u2019un motif rythmique r\u00e9p\u00e9titif et syncop\u00e9 qui rappelle de la musique famili\u00e8re, mais dont les contours nous \u00e9chappent. Des soup\u00e7ons de musique traditionnelle juive et arabe saupoudrent une splendide m\u00e9lodie au piano. Rappelant Philip Glass et la bande sonore de <i>Shtisel<\/i>, une s\u00e9rie <i>Netflix<\/i> isra\u00e9lienne, la pure simplicit\u00e9 de l\u2019\u00e9criture est splendide.<\/p>\n<p>Dans son duo pour piano et violon <i>If Life Were Like a Mirror<\/i>, Lau offre un bouquet de th\u00e8mes, m\u00e9lodies et fragments musicaux familiers dont les sources ne sont pas toujours claires. Dans un collage postmoderne de fragments, l\u2019auditeur peut relever l\u2019\u0153uvre de J.\u00a0S. Bach (incluant <i>J\u00e9sus, que ma joie demeure<\/i>), Beethoven (sonates <i>Appassionata<\/i>, <i>Au clair de lune<\/i> et op. 111), Mozart (<i>Sonate en mi mineur pour violon et piano<\/i>) et Piazolla (accents de tango).<\/p>\n<p>Le reste de l\u2019album contient <i>Piano Trio No. 1, Timescape Variations<\/i>, <i>A Simple Secret<\/i> pour trio avec piano et <i>Intuitions No. 2<\/i> pour violon et violoncelle. Dans une harmonie parfaite entre le contenu po\u00e9tique de la musique et les talents de chacun des membres du trio, l\u2019imagination color\u00e9e de Lau \u00e9voque la nature, l\u2019oc\u00e9an et les grands espaces. L\u2019\u00e9criture d\u2019une grande sensibilit\u00e9 m\u00e9lodique projette une \u00e9motion d\u00e9licate. Le rythme dynamique assure le flot continu de la musique.<\/p>\n<p>Voici donc une merveilleuse d\u00e9couverte d\u2019\u0153uvres contemporaines accessibles, agr\u00e9ables \u00e0 \u00e9couter et riches en tous aspects\u00a0: m\u00e9lodie, rythme, couleur et harmonie, contrepoint, technique, sonorit\u00e9 et timbre. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019excellent enregistrement des ing\u00e9nieurs de Leaf Music, l\u2019imagination de Lau est pleinement capt\u00e9e et exprim\u00e9e par le jeu brillant du St. John-Mercer-Park Trio.
