Le chef Andris Nelsons est un Letton qui a grandi dans un pays post-sovi\u00e9tique encore assombri par les fant\u00f4mes de Chostakovitch. L&#8217;Orchestre symphonique de Boston sonne plus fort sur disque que n&#8217;importe quel interpr\u00e8te russe et le sentiment de deux superpuissances musicales entrant en collision dans des \u0153uvres controvers\u00e9es ajoute un frisson d&#8217;excitation \u00e0 cette ambitieuse entreprise.<\/p>\n<p>Ce dernier volet du cycle contient trois symphonies invendables et une quatri\u00e8me indomptable. La deuxi\u00e8me symphonie de Chostakovitch c\u00e9l\u00e8bre le dixi\u00e8me anniversaire de la r\u00e9volution bolchevique, la troisi\u00e8me, les f\u00eates de mai. Le compositeur, qui croit encore na\u00efvement dans le communisme, produit des \u00e9bats pu\u00e9rils dans des sonorit\u00e9s teint\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019eau de rose. \u00c0 20 ans, on peut lui pardonner.<\/p>\n<p>La Symphonie no 12, \u00ab\u00a0l&#8217;ann\u00e9e 1917\u00a0\u00bb, arrive trois d\u00e9cennies plus tard, enterrant la d\u00e9sillusion du compositeur sous un titre propagandiste. La 13e est <em>Baby-Yar<\/em>, le grand cri moral de Chostakovitch contre l&#8217;antis\u00e9mitisme institutionnel sovi\u00e9tique et la complicit\u00e9 dans l&#8217;Holocauste. Chacune de ces \u0153uvres troublantes exige un rare amalgame de clart\u00e9 intellectuelle et de propulsion physique.<\/p>\n<p>Nelsons n&#8217;est impressionn\u00e9 ni par l&#8217;un ni par l&#8217;autre. Il s&#8217;agit de lectures simplifi\u00e9es \u00e0 l&#8217;extr\u00eame et peu puissantes de quatre grandes partitions. Dans les deuxi\u00e8me et douzi\u00e8me symphonies, il y a des moments o\u00f9 l&#8217;on peut presque entendre la musique s&#8217;essouffler. Dans <em>Babi-Yar<\/em>, l&#8217;orchestre et le ch\u0153ur s&#8217;acharnent sur des tempos peu gratifiants. Le baryton soliste Matthias Goerne fait de son mieux. Mais le chef d&#8217;orchestre semble absent de la salle, ne voulant pas s&#8217;engager dans une r\u00e9solution plut\u00f4t qu&#8217;une autre. Cet album est d\u00e9courageant.
