Leading neuroscientists Robert Zatorre and Simone Dalla Bella will join musicians from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for an event that combines performance and conversation, exploring music\u2019s impact on the brain. Michel Rochon, scientific journalist and author, will host a conversation on topics ranging from our emotional responses to music, the impact of musical activities on brain plasticity, and the human perception of rhythm (Oct. 16). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.amazingbrainweek.ca<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Les jours heureux<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a successful screening at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les jours heureux<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will have its Montreal premi\u00e8re at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Maisonneuve (Oct. 16). Directed by Chlo\u00e9 Robichaud, and produced by Pierre Even, the film tells the story of a young Montreal conductor (Emma) and her complicated relationship with her father and agent (Patrick). Audience members will be seated around cocktail and lounge tables at Salon 1861. The curiously titled concert, which falls on the 50<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> birthday of conductor Andrew Gray, will include a wide variety of choral selections\u2014ranging from Monteverdi, to Grieg, to Whitacre\u2014all of which explore the ecstatic and the sensual. The choir will premi\u00e8re two new Canadian works, one of which (by Rebecca Gray) has been commissioned specifically for the occasion (Oct. 21).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.vocesboreales.org<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Andrew Wan and the OSM<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fall, concertmaster Andrew Wan will step into the spotlight with the OSM and conductor Rafael Payare to perform Beethoven\u2019s Violin Concerto in D major, Op.61. Also on the program are works by other canonical Viennese composers: Bach\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Musical Offering<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, BWV 1079, \u201cRicercar a 6;\u201d arranged by Webern; Mozart\u2019s Symphony No. 35 in D major, K. 385, \u201cHaffner;\u201d and Webern\u2019s Passacaglia, Op. 1. Set in a faraway city named C\u00e9rul\u00e9e, the opera tells the story of a 200-year-old power-hungry vampire who has been unleashed on the townspeople, who must find a way to neutralize her powers before it\u2019s too late. Also on the program are excerpts of Jaap Nico Hamburger\u2019s opera, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ariella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will be premi\u00e8red in this concert version. Starring Aline Kutan, Myriam Leblanc, Eric Laporte, and Enzo Sabbagha, the opera, with libretto by Thomas Beijer, tells the story of a family recovering in the wake of the death of their matriarch. Ariella, sung by Leblanc, finds maturity as she grieves the loss of her mother (Kutan) (Oct. 28). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.filmharmonique.ca<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Op\u00e9ra Bouffe du Qu\u00e9bec<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming up, the Op\u00e9ra Bouffe du Qu\u00e9bec will perform <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La P\u00e9richole<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Jacques Offenbach. Conducted by Simon Fournier, and directed by Alain Zouvi, the production will star Rosalie Lane L\u00e9pine in the titular role, alongside Thomas Vinals, Geoffroy Salvas, Alexandre Iannuzzi and \u00c9ric Th\u00e9riault (Oct. 28-Nov.5). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.operabouffe.org<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>One Thousand <\/i><\/b><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i>and One Drums<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conducted by Elim Chan, with percussionist Dominique Vleeshouwers, the Orchestre M\u00e9tropolitain will perform a collection of percussive hits. First, the orchestra will interpret British composer Anna Clyne\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Midnight Hour<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Next on the program is Hungarian composer Peter E\u00f6tv\u00f6s\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking Drums<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, followed by Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s enchanting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scheherazade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Nov. 3). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.orchestremetropolitain.com<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>MUSICA CAMERATA\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musica Camerata\u2019s\u00a0 second concert of the 2023-24 season will take place at the Salle Joseph-Rouleau, in the Maison Andr\u00e9-Bourbeau. On the program are Haydn\u2019s Trio for piano and strings in Eb major, No. 29, as well as C. Villiers Stanford\u2019s Quintet for piano and strings in D, Op. 25, and his Piano Quintet in D, Op. 25 (Nov. 4). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.cameratamontreal.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Gino Vannelli Returns<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fall, Gino Vannelli will make his highly anticipated return to Montreal, alongside the Orchestre Philharmonique du Qu\u00e9bec, under the direction of Alexandre Da Costa. Performing Tchaikovsky\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Francesca da Rimini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Vannelli\u2019s own <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Songs for voice and orchestra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the team is surely to delight audiences at the Maison symphonique (Nov. 5). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.philharmonique.quebec<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>OUM Performs <\/b><b><i>Daphnis et Chlo\u00e9<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Orchestre de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al will open its season with a concert that pairs old favourites with innovative new works. First up, the orchestra, conducted by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Rivest, and joined by students of the \u00c9cole sup\u00e9rieure de ballet du Qu\u00e9bec, pianists Ming Wong and Charissa Vandikas, the Orchestre M\u00e9tropolitain choir, and choirs from \u00c9cole de musique Vincent-d\u2019Indy will perform the 2023 OUM Concerto Competition winning piece, Sne\u017eana Ne\u0161i\u0107\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creation. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will then interpret Mendelssohn\u2019s Concerto for Two Pianos, followed by excerpts from Ravel\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daphnis et Chlo\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Nov. 12).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.musique.umontreal.ca<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Amadeus Choir of Toronto: <\/b><b><i>Nosferatu<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Amadeus Choir celebrates its 50<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anniversary season with a special Halloween-themed concert presentation of the 1922 silent film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nosferatu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The famous film will be paired with Juno-nominated composer and bassist Andrew Downing\u2019s soundtrack, performed by the choir and a nine-piece jazz combo (Oct. 20).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.amadeuschoir.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Toronto Mendelssohn Choir: <\/b><b><i>Carmina Burana<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the direction of Jean-S\u00e9bastien Vall\u00e9e, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir will perform Orff\u2019s canonical <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carmina Burana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as Brahms\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schicksalslied<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Op. 54. The Toronto Children\u2019s Chorus and members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra will join the choir for these works, as well as the premi\u00e8re of a new composition by Tracy Wong. Celebrating the popular music of the 1960s, members of the orchestra will join forces with Andrew Downing and Alex Samaras to perform arrangements of music by The Beatles, David Bowie, Queen, and Petula Clark, alongside British music from the 1600s.
