Mozart, mort peu apr\u00e8s le premier d\u00e9part de Vienne de Haydn, a orient\u00e9 ses symphonies vers un territoire tonal plus sombre et dangereux. Beethoven, \u00e0 qui Haydn a enseign\u00e9 \u00e0 son retour, \u00e9tait pr\u00eat \u00e0 sauter dans un nouveau si\u00e8cle d&#8217;effervescence r\u00e9volutionnaire.
