Pilier du jazz montr\u00e9alais depuis des lustres, il se retrouve avec ses \u00ab\u00a0amis\u00a0\u00bb de longue date Frank Lozano, saxos t\u00e9nor et soprano, Fran\u00e7ois Bourassa, piano, et Pierre Tanguay, batterie. Dans la foul\u00e9e de deux disques d\u00e9di\u00e9s \u00e0 Bill Evans, ces messieurs proposent un programme de pi\u00e8ces originales, \u00e9crites en bonne partie par le pianiste, huit au total, les unes aussi bien ficel\u00e9es que les autres. Conviviale, la musique se d\u00e9ploie sans heurts sur des tempos oscillant entre le moyen et le lent (quatre ballades), la r\u00e9sultante \u00e9tant un jazz tr\u00e8s d\u00e9contract\u00e9, parfait pour une soir\u00e9e de d\u00e9tente. Homme de toutes les occasions jazzistiques, Swainson a produit peu de disques en son nom, son plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre \u00e9tant <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><i>49th Parallel<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">. Le voici de retour, une fois de plus en quintette d\u2019instrumentation identique \u00e0 son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur, soit une trompette et un saxo t\u00e9nor appuy\u00e9 d\u2019un trio piano. Toutes les dix compositions au programme sont du bassiste, chacune conforme au style hard bop. \u00c0 bien des \u00e9gards, cet album est une reprise de l\u2019album ant\u00e9rieur qui comptait deux grosses pointures, Woody Shaw et Joe Henderson (tous deux disparus depuis, comme le batteur et le pianiste). Brad Turner et Kelly Jefferson prennent le relais ici, la rythmique assur\u00e9e par Renee Rosnes et Lewis Nash. Quatre plages s\u2019\u00e9talent sur plus d\u2019une heure, la premi\u00e8re et la derni\u00e8re \u00e9tant deux prises du m\u00eame morceau (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><i>Tattarrattat<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">), les deux autres plus br\u00e8ves, la premi\u00e8re donnant le titre \u00e0 l\u2019album, la seconde intitul\u00e9e <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><i>Never Odd or Even<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">. Bassiste de premier plan de la sc\u00e8ne new-yorkaise contemporaine, cet excellent musicien a recrut\u00e9 deux solides complices, le batteur Vinnie Sperazza et l\u2019un des n\u00f4tres qui fait d\u00e9sormais carri\u00e8re dans cette ville, le saxo Chet Doxas. Notons que ce dernier nous d\u00e9voile une autre arme dans son arsenal, le saxophone soprano, d\u00e9montrant une aisance \u00e9gale sinon sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle avec son premier instrument et marque de commerce, le saxo t\u00e9nor, sans oublier la clarinette, entendue bri\u00e8vement sur une des plages. En voici un. S\u2019il fallait d\u00e9crire cette nouveaut\u00e9 du pianiste John Escreet par un seul mot, ce serait \u00ab\u00a0intensit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb. Juste son titre, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><i>Seismic Shift<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">, vend un peu la m\u00e8che sur la teneur de cet album. M\u00eame si la d\u00e9signation de la pi\u00e8ce d\u2019ouverture (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><i>Study No\u00a01<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">) pourrait donner l\u2019impression d\u2019une esquisse, on entend d\u00e8s les premiers instants un pianiste qui se lance dans une attaque sonore en r\u00e8gle livr\u00e9e \u00e0 coup de lignes v\u00e9loces et d\u2019accords puissants, une approche salutaire nettement diff\u00e9rente des entr\u00e9es en mati\u00e8re plut\u00f4t douces \u00e0 la sauce ECM. Escreet donne le ton \u00e0 l\u2019enregistrement d\u2019une cinquantaine de minutes r\u00e9parties en neuf plages, ses accompagnateurs Eric Revis et Damion Reid (basse et batterie) donnant du corps \u00e0 cette entreprise musicale tonifiante. Telle est la teneur de cet album en trio de l\u2019impressionnant batteur Tyshawn Sorey, accompagn\u00e9 du bassiste Matt Brewer et du pianiste Aaron Diehl. La formule est quelque peu surprenante pour le batteur, que les amateurs connaissent comme figure de proue des musiques dites cr\u00e9atives, incluant ses ambitions de compositeur de musiques savantes, car il a puis\u00e9 uniquement dans un r\u00e9pertoire de jazz traditionnel, choisissant cinq morceaux regroup\u00e9s sur un microsillon et un sixi\u00e8me figurant seulement sur les versions num\u00e9riques (compact et t\u00e9l\u00e9chargement). \u00c0 tour de r\u00f4le, on entend d\u00e9filer des morceaux de Horace Silver, Herb Ellis, Joseph Kosma (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\"><i>Les feuilles mortes<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #303234;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">), Paul Motian et Duke Ellington, ainsi qu\u2019un titre de Muhal Richard Abrams, le plus avant-gardiste du lot. Comme cela n\u2019est qu\u2019une tendance, les exceptions abondent. Si l\u2019on se fie au plus r\u00e9cent album de Davheed Behroozi publi\u00e9 chez Sunnyside, son approche est davantage celle du pianiste classique, tant par sa touche, plut\u00f4t impressionniste, que par un jeu en blocs d\u2019accords. Toutes sauf une pi\u00e8ce suivent ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9, l\u2019avant-derni\u00e8re \u00e9tant la seule jou\u00e9e de mani\u00e8re lin\u00e9aire. Dans l\u2019ensemble, une ambiance introspective plane sur ce disque, le pianiste utilisant beaucoup les p\u00e9dales \u00e0 cette fin. Donn\u00e9 un an plus tard, le concert a ravi le public, comme le montrent les applaudissements nourris. La sonorit\u00e9 ample sourd des tripes du saxo et il transmet m\u00eame une certaine spiritualit\u00e9 dans ses g\u00e9n\u00e9reux solos. Le trio, chapeaut\u00e9 par le pianiste cubain Aruan Ortiz, contribue aux brillants r\u00e9sultats.
