Ce n\u2019est plus Leopold Godowsky, Nikola\u00ef Medtner ou Samuel Feinberg, mais cette fois le compositeur am\u00e9ricain William Bolcom, n\u00e9 en 1938, qui a droit aux honneurs.<\/p>\n<p>Paru chez la maison ind\u00e9pendante britannique Hyperion, le nouvel album d\u2019Hamelin fait, de plus, entendre un r\u00e9pertoire jamais entendu jusqu\u2019alors chez le musicien, celui des rags typiquement associ\u00e9s au compositeur afro-am\u00e9ricain Scott Joplin. Ce dernier est aujourd\u2019hui bien connu pour <em>The Entertainer<\/em>, mais il n\u2019en a pas toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 ainsi. Avant 1967, William Bolcom, alors \u00e2g\u00e9 de 29 ans, n\u2019en avait jamais entendu parler. Le revivalisme du ragtime dans les ann\u00e9es 1970 a fait red\u00e9couvrir tout un pan de la musique am\u00e9ricaine et le jeune compositeur, en compagnie d\u2019autres de ses amis comme Bill Albright, s\u2019est engouffr\u00e9 dans la br\u00e8che.<\/p>\n<p>En proposant l\u2019int\u00e9grale de la musique ragtime de Bolcom, Hamelin nous plonge dans une ambiance aux antipodes des concerts de musique guind\u00e9s. Place au plaisir et \u00e0 la d\u00e9con- traction ! Cela dit, le pianiste canadien reste \u00e0 tout moment irr\u00e9prochable. Son jeu est virevoltant, tout en subtilit\u00e9s et en vagues abondantes. Certains rags ont de quoi \u00e9tonner, comme <em>Tabby<\/em> <em>Cat<\/em> <em>Walk<\/em> et ses longs silences dramatiques. D\u2019autres sont loin d\u2019\u00eatre festifs : <em>The<\/em> <em>Serpent\u2019s<\/em> <em>Kiss<\/em>, par exemple, a quelque chose d\u2019angoissant. En plus du piano, on croirait entendre des os qui s\u2019entrechoquent, ajoutant \u00e0 l\u2019impression de danse macabre.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est tout un univers rempli de joies, de coups durs et de moments m\u00e9lancoliques dans lequel on aime se perdre.
