Sa musique va du morbide au mis\u00e9rable, impossible de fredonner les m\u00e9lodies, et la simple virtuosit\u00e9 des doigts ne suffit pas \u00e0 expliquer son attrait infaillible et in\u00e9puisable. Rachmaninov reste un best-seller de premier plan. Mais un nouveau disque du pianiste \u00e9cossais introspectif Steven Osborne m&#8217;a fait r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 l&#8217;irr\u00e9sistibilit\u00e9 cach\u00e9e de la premi\u00e8re sonate pour piano et au populisme sans g\u00eane des <em>Moments musicaux<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n<p>La sonate de 1907, rarement entendue en concert, poss\u00e8de un mouvement central qui fait l&#8217;effet d&#8217;un ver d&#8217;oreille et qui anticipe Yesterday des Beatles \u2212 pas seulement le motif de signature \u00e0 trois notes, mais aussi une allusion distincte \u00e0 la phrase suivante \u00ab all my troubles seemed so far away \u00bb. Se peut-il que Paul McCartney l&#8217;ait entendu lorsqu&#8217;il vivait avec Jane Asher, dont la m\u00e8re \u00e9tait professeur \u00e0 la Royal Academy of Music ? Rachmaninov, pour sa part, enfouit la m\u00e9lodie dans les recoins les plus profonds du cerveau de l&#8217;auditeur.<\/p>\r\n<p>Les <em>Moments<\/em>, opus 16, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crits comme une sorte de distributeur automatique de billets apr\u00e8s que Rachmaninov a \u00e9t\u00e9 victime de vol dans un train. Contrairement \u00e0 Schubert et Chopin, deux influences \u00e9videntes, il n&#8217;y a pas d&#8217;appel manifeste au sentiment. Rachmaninov \u00e9crit des miniatures qu&#8217;un \u00e9diteur ach\u00e8tera sans les avoir vues et qu&#8217;un amateur d\u00e9cent pourra jouer chez lui. Le caract\u00e8re pratique et professionnel de ces morceaux est affin\u00e9 par la subtilit\u00e9 de l&#8217;interpr\u00e9tation habile et immersive d&#8217;Osborne. Le troisi\u00e8me <em>Moment<\/em>, en si mineur, est \u00e0 savourer pour des ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir.
