Deux \u0153uvres de compositeurs perdus dans les brumes politiques de l&#8217;Europe de l&#8217;Est trouvent une r\u00e9sonance profonde au milieu des horreurs du dernier outrage de la Russie en Ukraine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Erwin Schulhoff \u00e9tait un communiste convaincu qui n&#8217;a pas r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 se faire entendre dans l&#8217;Allemagne des ann\u00e9es 1920 et qui est retourn\u00e9 dans sa ville natale, Prague, o\u00f9 il a travaill\u00e9 comme pianiste \u00e0 la radio d&#8217;\u00c9tat et \u00e9crit des pi\u00e8ces o\u00f9 l&#8217;on retrouve des \u00e9chos de jazz, de danse de salon et de m\u00e9lancolie. Lorsque les nazis arrivent, il est envoy\u00e9 dans un camp de concentration, o\u00f9 il meurt en 1942, \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e2ge de 48 ans.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ses cinq pi\u00e8ces pour quatuor \u00e0 cordes, dat\u00e9es de 1923, transmettent la lassitude de <em>La Valse<\/em> de Ravel, ainsi qu&#8217;une pointe persistante de tentation \u00e9rotique et de provocation conversationnelle. On les aurait qualifi\u00e9es de charmantes \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9poque, si elles n&#8217;avaient pas \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9es par un soup\u00e7on de menace.<\/p>\r\n<p>La premi\u00e8re symphonie de Gavriil Popov a \u00e9t\u00e9 interdite par Staline apr\u00e8s sa premi\u00e8re repr\u00e9sentation en 1935, condamn\u00e9e comme art anti-populaire pour son pessimisme irr\u00e9m\u00e9diable. Popov se tourna vers l&#8217;alcool pour se r\u00e9conforter, mais continua \u00e0 \u00e9crire des symphonies, esp\u00e9rant s&#8217;attirer les faveurs de Staline avec des titres tels qu\u2019<em>Honneur \u00e0 la patrie <\/em>et <em>Honneur \u00e0 notre parti<\/em>. Il re\u00e7oit le prix Staline en 1946, mais est \u00e0 nouveau interdit.<\/p>\r\n<p>D\u00e9sesp\u00e9rant d&#8217;\u00eatre entendu, il transforme sa cinqui\u00e8me symphonie en un quatuor \u00e0 cordes de 1951, \u00e9conomisant sur l&#8217;\u00e9chelle, mais pas sur la m\u00e9lancolie spartiate. Pensez \u00e0 une rencontre entre Kurt Weill et Anton von Webern et vous aurez une id\u00e9e de ses textures. Ici et l\u00e0, avec une ironie d\u00e9concertante, il cite l&#8217;<em>Ode \u00e0 la joie <\/em>de Beethoven.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ces deux raret\u00e9s en marge des principes du quatuor \u00e0 cordes sont d\u00e9poussi\u00e9r\u00e9es et jou\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re exquise par le Quatuor Berlin-Tokyo, un ensemble compos\u00e9 de deux Japonais, d&#8217;un Tch\u00e8que et d&#8217;un Russe.
