The Orchestre national de Jazz de Montréal (ONJ) launches its ninth concert season with a program of works penned by the late Oliver Nelson (1932-1975). In his New York heyday of the 1960s, this saxophonist and composer enjoyed a modicum of success for his own albums while earning his stripes as a session arranger for several big stars, most notably Thelonious Monk. The final years of his life were spent in California, where he laboured intensely on writing film scores for the motion picture industry and theme songs for TV shows. Now more than four decades later, his musical legacy is pretty much forgotten, hardly taken up by anyone nowadays, save for his most famous number Stolen Moments. After years of neglect, it was time for someone to revisit Nelson’s music, and given the ONJ’s interest in exploring repertoires of all eras, it’s almost a no-brainer for them to take up this long overdue task. Ron Di Lauro will conduct the band through a program of swinging periods pieces, all deftly arranged by one of the most accomplished writers of that era.
