Mamachimowin by Andrew Balfour – a TMC commission

In the Beginning by Aaron Copland

Mass for the Endangered by Sarah Kirkland Snider – a Canadian premiere

ON THE MUSIC

Andrew Balfour composed Mamachimowin for the TMC’s 125th anniversary concert in 2019. Andrew says:  Mamachimowin (The act of singing praises) is a choral work that explores the difficult relationship between Indigenous spirituality and the impact of the Christian culture on First Nations people.  Translating Psalm 67 into Cree, I wanted to add a musical perspective that added a dimension of fragmentation into the structure of the work.”

Mass for the Endangered is a hymn for the voiceless and the discounted, a requiem for the not-yet-gone. Using original text by writer, visual artist, and musician, Nathaniel Bellows, in combination with the traditional Latin, Mass for the Endangered embodies a prayer for endangered animals and the environments in which they live.

Enjoy the concert in person (limited tickets will be sold and strict Covid-19 health and safety protocols will be in place) or enjoy it livestreamed from home. Read about the TMC’s current Covid-19 safety practices.

Tickets will go on sale in April 2022.
