One of our most beautiful and varied programmes yet! Our concert takes its name from Gordon Lightfoot’s classic ballad, which we will present in an arrangement written for one of Canada’s premier a cappella ensembles, musica intima.
“Solstice Carole”, by Kim Baryluk of the Wyrd Sisters, and “The Snow It Melts the Soonest”, a folksong made famous by Sting, along with “The Frost” by Kathleen Allan, all celebrate the beauty of winter while anticipating the earth’s turn towards longer days.
Another song for a winter’s night is a setting of “The Darkling Thrush”, by English poet Thomas Hardy. It depicts a melancholy figure in a bleak winter landscape, whose mood is transformed by the “joy illimited” of a bird’s evening song. We are delighted to present an original setting of this poem by Martin Fairbank, long-time member of the Sainte-Anne Singers.
As always, we include some familiar carols in exquisite settings, such as “Entre le boeuf et l’âne gris” (Schronen), “Noël, c’est l’amour” (Owolabi), “Away in a Manger” (Gjeilo) and “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” (Jansson).
A Swingle-style arrangement of a Bach Sinfonia, two jazz settings of carols, the Real Group’s “The World For Christmas” and a witty arrangement of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” will round off our programme of songs to warm you on a winter’s night.
