With a graduate degree in music from the University of Cape Town, the South African soprano Golda Schultz spent a few years singing in African opera houses before making her first voyage across the Atlantic to successfully audition for the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. The rest is musical history, as this fast-rising operatic soprano has since become the darling of Manhattan, and also of London, Paris, Berlin, Zürich, Copenhagen, Vienna – and everywhere else she has graced a stage. She currently can be seen and heard performing the role of Clara in The Met Opera’s Live in HD production of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. For this special recital, the Grammy Award-winning star makes her Canadian debut, alongside award-winning American pianist Jonathan Ware, with a powerhouse program of all-female composers that includes works by Clara Schumann, Emilie Mayer, Rebecca Clarke, and Nadia Boulanger, as well as a beautiful newly commissioned song cycle from South African composer Kathleen Tagg in collaboration with librettist Lila Palmer. Diplômée en musique de l’université du Cap, la soprano sud-africaine Golda Schultz a passé quelques années à chanter dans des opéras africains avant de traverser l’Atlantique pour passer avec succès une audition à la prestigieuse Juilliard School de New York. Le reste appartient à l’histoire de la musique, car cette soprano d’opéra en pleine ascension est depuis devenue la coqueluche de Manhattan, mais aussi de Londres, de Paris, de Berlin, de Zurich, de Copenhague, de Vienne et de tous les autres endroits où elle s’est produite sur scène. Actuellement, on peut la voir et l’entendre dans le rôle de Clara dans la production Live in HD du Met Opera de Porgy and Bess de George Gershwin. Pour ce récital spécial, la star lauréate d’un Grammy Award fait ses débuts au Canada, aux côtés du pianiste américain primé Jonathan Ware, avec un programme puissant de compositrices comprenant des œuvres de Clara Schumann, Emilie Mayer, Rebecca Clarke et Nadia Boulanger, ainsi qu’un magnifique cycle de chansons récemment commandé à la compositrice sud-africaine Kathleen Tagg en collaboration avec la librettiste Lila Palmer.
