Pieter Wispelwey est un violoncelliste néerlandais qui fut, en 1992, le premier à recevoir le Netherlands Music Prize, un prix décerné par le gouvernement néerlandais au jeune artiste le plus prometteur. Né à Haarlem aux Pays-Bas, il étudie auprès de Dicky Boeke et Anner Bijlsma à Amsterdam, avec Paul Katz aux États-Unis et William Pleeth à Londres. Il se positionne actuellement comme l’un des grands interprètes du violoncelle, son répertoire allant du baroque au contemporain. Sa carrière s’étend sur plusieurs continents avec des apparitions remarquées sur les plus grandes scènes musicales. Son sens du style extrême-ment raffiné, sa maîtrise instrumentale exceptionnelle et ses interprétations dynamiques, dans un répertoire allant de J.S. Bach à E. Carter, en ont fait un favori, tant du public que de la critique internationale. Se produisant tant en soliste qu’avec des orchestres ou des petits ensembles, Pieter Wispelwey possède une importante discographie comprenant notamment l’intégrale des Suites pour violoncelle seul de Bach, des œuvres de Lutoslawski ou des transcriptions de pièces de Chopin. Il joue son répertoire baroque sur un Rombouts de 1710, et son répertoire romantique et moderne sur un Guadagnini de 1760.

This charismatic Dutch cellist is also renowned for being equally at ease playing both Baroque and modern instruments. For Baroque repertory he uses a 1710 Rombouts instrument, and for romantic and modern music a 1760 Guadagnini cello. With his acute stylistic awareness, combined with a truly original interpretation and phenomenal technical mastery, Wispelwey has won the hearts of critics and public alike in repertory from Bach to Schnittke. In 1992 he became the first cellist ever to receive the Netherlands Music Prize, which is awarded to the most promising young musician in the Netherlands. Wispelwey’s discography encompasses more than twenty recordings, his career spans five continents and he has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras.
