For his fifth opera and his first adaptation to the lyrical stage of a play by Victor Hugo, Verdi offers us a work of unbridled romanticism in which each of the four main roles presents great challenges for the performers.
Using scores and listenings compared to disc and video, it is shown that few performers have been able to do full justice to this demanding work. The video extracts are taken from productions captured in New York, Milan, Monte-Carlo and Parma.

With Mirella Freni, Nicolaï Ghiaurov, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Sherrill Milnes, Luciano Pavarotti, Ruggero Raimondi, Ludovic Tézier and other renowned performers.
