In 1796, Ludwig van Beethoven, a young composer and piano virtuoso, was become a Viennese celebrity and was preparing for a major tour of Central Europe. Our program celebrates Beethoven’s time in Berlin, where he met the greatest cellists of the time, the Duport brothers and the patron and amateur cellist, Frederick-Wilhelm II of Prussia. The first two sonatas for cello and piano by Beethoven are great masterworks of the repertoire and demand strong roles from each instrument.
