This opulent evening of musicopens with Du crépuscule à l’aube written by the Québécois composer Simon Bertrand, a fascinating work for the variety of rhythmic motives and shere contrasts. Beethoven’s Ninth is the pinacle of its author´s oeuvre. The power of the orchestra’s choir coupled with the solo voices of four leading Canadian singers bring out all of the depth found in this colossal piece of music. So the legend goes, Beethoven was apparently not aware of the standing ovation given to him at its premiere, as he was then totally deaf and so immersed in the score he was conducting. Were it not for the soprano Caroline Unger’s decision to turn him around to face the audience, he would have never known that his much acclaimed work was about to go down into history. Even Wagner called it the last of the symphonies, whereas Debussy saw it as proof of the fact there was no more need for writing symphonies.
