Bruce Liu, piano

Montreal native Bruce Liu, 2021 Chopin Competition Winner, jumps into the 2022-2023 concert season after a robust summer of performances, featuring appearances in Germany, Finland, France, Switzerland, Italy and Canada, to name a few. Liu finishes his summer with a performance in Poland (Aug. 26-31), under the baton of Vasily Petrenko with the Warsaw Philharmonic (Chopin Concerto No.2). He begins his fall in Norway, where he will perform a program of Rameau, Chopin, Ravel and Liszt (Sept. 2). This will be followed by two appearances in Ottawa (Sept. 8 and 9), with the National Arts Centre Orchestra conducted by Alexander Shelley, with whom he will perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganiniwww.bruce-liu.com

Simone McIntosh, mezzo-soprano

Having recently won first place in the aria division of the 2022 Concours Musical International de Montréal, former Adler Fellow and Canadian Opera Co. Ensemble Studio member Simone McIntosh looks to a robust season with the Zürich Opera House, with whom she will perform in the roles of Siegrune in Die Walküre (Sept. 18-Oct. 18), Flora in La Traviata (Dec. 23-Jan. 15) and Arsamene in Serse (May 6-17), as a member of their International Opera Studio. www.simonemcintosh.com

Keri-Lynn Wilson, conductor

Winnipeg native Keri-Lynn Wilson has been busy in the wake of her 2021-22 season, as she toured internationally with the recently founded Ukranian Freedom Orchestra over the summer. This fall, Wilson will conduct Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Metropolitan Opera (Sept. 29, Oct. 2-21), and Tosca at the Teatro Colón (Nov. 22-30, Dec. 1-4), as well as leading the Orchestre national Bordeaux Aquitaine in a vocal recital with mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk (Oct. 27), and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (Nov. 12), with violinist Rusnė Mataitytė. Maestro Wilson will return to Canada in May 2023 to conduct l’Opéra de Montréal’s production of Madama Butterfly. www.keri-lynnwilson.com

Wallis Giunta, mezzo-soprano

Mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta continues to assert her presence on the international stage, having performed with Opéra de Lyon, the Dallas Opera, Philharmonia Baroque, and at both the Leeds Lieder Festival and the Internationale Barocktage Stift Melk in 2022. Following her BBC Proms debut in August, where she sang the Queen of Sheba in Handel’s Solomon (conducted by Maestro Sofi Jeannin), Giunta will be featured as part of the Vienna Volksoper’s 2023 season this fall as Angelina in La Cenerentola (Sept. 4-Oct. 16), Orlofsky in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus (Nov. 10), and Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel (Dec. 11-Jan. 6). Her work with the Volksoper will continue in the new year, when she sings Cherubino in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro (Jan. 29-Feb. 12, 2023), Elisabeth in Die Letzte Verschwörung (March 25, April 4-8, 12), and Maria in The Sound of Music (April 10, 18-30). François Girard, stage director

Following last year’s run of his production of Lohengrin at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, just before the outbreak of war in Ukraine, François Girard’s acclaimed stagings of both Wagner’s Lohengrin and Der fliegende Holländer will claim the Metropolitan Opera as their 2023 home. The former will run in February and March of 2023 (Feb. 26-April 1), with the latter running in May and June (May 30-June 10). Barbara Hannigan, conductor, soprano

Maestro Hannigan truly never misses a beat. She ended her summer as director of an Equilibrium Young Artist workshop at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance in Nova Scotia, followed by a performance with the LUDWIG ballroom band in Rotterdam, in which she conducted and sang. She moves immediately to performances in Germany at the Lausitz Festival (Sept. 9), in Poland with the Ludwig Orchestra (Sept. 11), in Italy with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Sept. 16 and 17), in Sweden with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (Sept. 28 and 29), in England at the Royal Academy of Music (Oct. 1), and in France with the Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France (Oct. 8 and 9). She will also make appearances in North America, as both a conductor and soprano, at the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Nov. 15), as well as in Canada, with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. www.barbarahannigan.com

Maestro Nézet-Séguin is on the move! He starts his September off on tour with the Philadelphia Orchestra, joined by violinist Lisa Batiashvili and soprano Angel Blue, for performances in Berlin (Sept. 1), Dresden (Sept. 2), Lucerne (Sept. 4 and 5), Paris (Sept. 6 and 7), and ending in London, at the BBC Proms (Sept. 8 and 9). Following performances in Canada with the Orchestre Métropolitain, he will head back to Philadelphia for their opening night concert, featuring Lang Lang at the piano (Sept. 28), and a program with Daniil Trifonov (Sept. 30-Oct. 2). The month of October will have him back and forth, working with the OM and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In November, he will conduct Kevin Puts’s The Hours at the Metropolitan Opera, featuring a star-studded cast including Renée Fleming, Kelli O’Hara, and Joyce DiDonato, to name a few (Nov. 22-Dec. 1, Dec. 4-10).  www.yannicknezetseguin.com

Etienne Dupuis, baritone

Seasoned Canadian baritone Etienne Dupuis has been making his mark on the international stage for a number of years, and this one will be no exception. Following performances as the Conte di Luna in Verdi’s Il trovatore at home in Montreal (Sept. 10-18), Dupuis will head to France, to first sing Hérode in Massenet’s Hérodiade at the Opéra de Lyon (Nov. 23), and then at the Théâtre des Champs Élysées (Nov. 25)—a role he will later perform at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (June 15 and 18 2023). In the new year, Dupuis will assume the title role in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the Bayerische Staatsoper (Jan. 14-20), which he will sing later in the year (March 14-24) at the Wiener Staatsoper. In between these performances, he will sing Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen at the Opéra national de Paris. Emily D’Angelo, mezzo-soprano

The young mezzo-soprano can be heard around the world this upcoming season, beginning in New York City with a recital at the Park Avenue Armory (Sept. 16 and 18). Following these appearances, her singing will take her overseas to the Royal Opera House, where she will take on the role of Ruggiero in a new production of Handel’s Alcina by Richard Jones, conducted by Christian Curnyn (Nov. 8, 10, 14, 18, 21 and 24). In the new year, D’Angelo is set to sing Sesto in Handel’s Giulio Cesare at the Dutch National Opera (Jan. 16-Feb. 5, 2023) in a new production by Calixto Bieito, conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm. Along with song recitals in the United Kingdom and Spain, she will continue her season with more Handel, singing the title role in Ariodante at the Opéra national de Paris in April and May, followed by Juno in Semele at the Bayerische Staaatsoper Festival in July. www.emilydangelo.com
