Giorgia Fumanti released her 12th album, Mystic, on Aug. 22. It was recorded during the pandemic, during which her father died. The music reflects her loss. “It was a big shock when the pandemic began,” she says. “My parents live in Italy, and I followed it from there to its arrival in Quebec. The beginning of 2020 had me worried, and then it was Quebec’s turn. It was a major break in my career, with no concerts or travelling.” However, as soon as she could, the singer returned to the studio to create Mystic. “The album is a gift. Music…

Noted for organizing tributes to a single composer, the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec this season revisits the formula – pandemic willing – with a series of portrait concerts, starting Sept. 26, dedicated to the musical universe of André Hamel. Strongly influenced during his university studies by The Unanswered Question by Charles Ives, Hamel is open to all creative possibilities that seek to modify audio perception, either by putting musicians in different spaces, or by layering acoustic interference, or by a combination of the two. In these works, musical elements do not seem a priori to be made…

Emily Doolittle: composer; Jennifer King: piano. – Leaf Music, LM2015 From the upcoming album O Mistress Moon: Canadian Edition, Gleise 581c takes listeners to new heights, having us imagine ourselves looking at the planet from space, watching it turn, and projecting our wonder, imagination, and hopes onto it. Gleise 581c is a lively minimalistic work, full of sparkling atmospheric piano patterns that contrast with a dark and spacious otherworldly middle section. This work is eloquent in hopefulness and effective in its sparseness. This release is part of an advertising supplement and does not engage this magazine to any opinions that may be…
