Laurianne Houde is finishing her baccalaureate in violin at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec with Catherine Dallaire, who has taught her since she was 10 years old. Music has been a presence from her earliest years, says this first prize laureate of the Canadian Music Competition, who won with performances of Bach, Mozart, Paganini and the first movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. This is her favourite work, especially the largamente passage. “It always gives me chills when the expressive sixths follow one another on the violin,” Houde says. “This is, in my opinion, the best part of the piece.”

The competition created one of her first performance opportunities since the pandemic. “At the time the competition was held, I did not have in-person violin lessons at the conservatory. I also hadn’t had the opportunity to perform my pieces in front of an audience before the competition, as I usually do. However, the simple fact of the competition motivated me throughout the pandemic to maintain the same rigour as I worked on my instrument. Having a violin on loan from CANIMEX also gives me a valuable tool, full of subtleties and possibilities, in the performance of my pieces.”

On her relationship with music, she adds: “I find music to be such a great way to express yourself and communicate. When I play my instrument, it is truly liberating. I particularly enjoy discovering new works, studying a piece in its context and exploring the musical language specific to each composer. I find these works all inspiring in their own way. It’s a real chance, as a musician, to perform great works like the Sibelius concerto, which I played at the Canadian Music Competition.”

This summer, Houde will participate in competitions and music festivals. After her baccalaureate, she will continue her master’s training and hopes to continue her journey abroad: “My dream is to go to Europe. I’ve always wanted to take lessons with great violin masters.”
