Rising steadily since winning 1st Prize and Grand Award at the National Music Festival in 2018 and being named one of the 30 Hot Classical Musicians Under 30 by the CBC in 2019, David Liam Roberts this year won the Michael Measures Award after winning second prize last year. A native of Winnipeg, where he studied for eight years with Yuri Hooker, this young cellist known for “his extraordinary technique and his genuinely communicative performances” is now studying at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music with Hans Jørgen Jensen and Andrés Díaz, thanks to a full scholarship (Chisholm) and support from the Manitoba Arts Council. At the Glenn Gould School, he was principal cello with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra under conductors such as Tania Miller and Andrei Feher.

In 2018, Roberts was a soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at the WMC McLellan Competition, where he won second prize after his performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. Roberts is also a frequent soloist with the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Also in 2018, he participated in the Morningside Music Bridge international program and festival in Warsaw. In 2019, Roberts was able to tour Canada and Spain with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and attend several masterclass festivals in Europe and North America. That same year, he was awarded the $5,000 Gail Asper Foundation Award of Excellence.

Passionate about educational outreach, he regularly gives online presentations to children around the world as a soloist for the Back to BACH project he has been leading since 2016.
