Concours musical international de Montréal : 6 violinists advance to the Final Round

6 violinists from 4 countries (United States, South Korea, Austria, Japan)

Montréal, June 2, 2019 – On June 1 and 2, the semi-final round of the 2019 Violin Edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal was held. Since May 29, 24 competitors from 12 countries have performed at Bourgie Hall in the hopes of winning the First Prize of one of Canada’s most prestigious music competition.

Tonight, the jury announced the names of the 6 violinists who are moving on to the final round.

Presided by Zarin Mehta, the 2019 international jury includes Pierre Amoyal (France), Kim Kashkashian (United States), Boris Kuschnir (Austria), Cho-Liang Lin (United States), Mihaela Martin (Romania), Barry Shiffman (Canada), Dmitry Sitkovetsky (United Kingdom/United States) and Pavel Vernikov (Israel/Switzerland).

In order of appearance, the finalists are:

June 4 (7:30 p.m.)

Fumika Mohri (Japan)
Johanna Pichlmair (Austria)

The Final round will take place at Maison symphonique with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, under the baton of guest conductor Alexander Shelley. All prizes will be awarded after the June 5th Final.

Prizes and Grants

Competitors are vying for $150,000 in prizes and grants.

First Prize

  • $30,000 offered by the City of Montreal
  • Joseph-Rouleau Career Development Grant from the Azrieli Foundation ($50,000)
  • A violin and bow handmade by the Maker’s Forum ($20,000 value)
  • Artistic residency at the Banff Centre for Arts
  • Concert engagement at the New Generation Festival in Florence, Italy

Second Prize Pierre-Péladeau and Raymonde-Chopin

  • $15,000 offered by Québecor 

Third Prize

  • $10,000 offered by Stingray Classica

Radio-Canada Audience Prize – $5,000

Prize for the best performance of a sonata in the semi-final – $2,5000 offered by Wilder & Davis

André-Bachand Prize for the best performance of the imposed Canadian piece (stand alone by Michael Oesterle) – $2,000 offered by Claudette Hould

Montreal Bach Festival Prize for the best performance of a work by J.S. Bach – $1,500 offered by the Montreal Bach Festival

Non-ranked finalists – $3,000 offered by Maurice Deschamps, Joseph Rouleau, and Elizabeth Wirth.
