+ Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal starts its 60th ballet season tonight with the premiere of Romeo & Juliet by French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot. The tragic love story of Shakespeare is set to Sergueï Prokofiev’s powerful score by Les Grands Ballets’ Orchestra conducted by Florian Ziemen.

 

+ GTA drummer Anthony Fung, 23, has been admitted to the prestigious Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at University of California, Los Angeles. The Richmond Hill native graduated with master’s degree from Boston’s Berklee Global Jazz Institute program last spring. He started his music career on a high school drum line and was first inspired by the 2002 film Drumline.

 

+ Hans Joachim Frey, head of the Brucknerhaus in Linz, Austria, will leave in 2017 to turn the Sochi Winter Olympics site into an international cultural and festivals centre. Frey, 51, wants to create a ‘Salzburg on the Black Sea’.

 

+ A viola player in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is accusing another player of selling him a fake viola. The instrument bought three years for 60,000 Euros, which was labeled ‘Luigi Mingazzi 1923 Ravenna’ is actually German-made and worth 50,000 less. The seller who is now in the Munich Philharmonic refuses to compensate. A Munich court will pass judgment on October 26.

 

+ Italian playwright, activist and self-styled jester, Dario Fo passed away today at the age of 90. Winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1997, Fo has been suffering from lung problems for months and was in the hospital for 12 days. (French)

 

+ Barbara Hannigan makes her record debut as conductor. The Canadian soprano’s album Crazy Girl Crazy will be released next year by the French label Alpha.

 

+ International violinist Kwon Hyuk-joo died of a heart attack in Busan, South Korea, yesterday. The winner of the 2004 Nielsen competition and graduate of the Moscow Central School, 31, was found unconscious in the back of a taxi after drinking with friends. (French)

 

+ Icelandic budget airline Wow allows musicians to travel with their instruments. There are three options available. Violins and violas can be brought into the cabin if they are small enough to pass as carry-on luggage. Bigger instruments can be check-in luggage packed in hard backed cases. If the instruments are to big to be luggage but can fit in a seat, musicians can book it as a ticket for them.
