Violinist Marc Djokic Wins Canada’s Biggest Classical Music Prize for Collaborative Emerging Artist – $125,000 Prix Goyer 2017-2018

Montréal, Québec, Sept. 13th, 2017 – Montréal violinist Marc Djokic, praised for his “rhythmic sense, natural phrasing and for his precise sounds” (La Presse), is the winner of the $125,000 Prix Goyer 2017-2018 for Collaborative Emerging Artist. Prix Goyer is the biggest prize in Canada and one of the largest in the world for a collaborative artist emerging in classical music. Prix Goyer honours Jean-Pierre Goyer and his contributions to music, arts and culture in Montréal, Québec and Canada. The prize will be presented to Marc on Wednesday, Sept. 13th, 2017 at 6:00 pm, at Mécénat Musica, Concerts noncerto and Ensemble Caprice iLove musique concert at Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur.

About Marc Djokic

Winner of Quebec’s Prix Opus and Canada Council’s Instrument Bank among numerous prizes, Marc
performs frequently as soloist in chamber music festivals across North America and with Canada’s top
orchestras including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Quebec Symphony Orchestra, PEI Symphony,
The National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Marc’s most recent
performances with leading musicians of the world stage include concerts with Beverley Johnston, James
Ehnes, Denise Djokic, Thorwald Jorgensen and Measha Brueggergosman. Marc’s current collaborations
include his Bev&Marc Duo for marimba and violin, Trio Tangere with guitarists Jérôme Ducharme and
Louis Trépanier, piano and violin duo with Julien Leblanc, and Ensemble Art Crush, a multidisciplinary
collaboration of music, art and dance, with artist Avery Zhao. Marc has toured numerous times with
premier touring organizations, Jeunesses Musicales Canada and Debut Atlantic.

Prix Goyer

The Prix Goyer, the biggest prize in Canada for classical music, was created to honour the late Jean-Pierre Goyer and his contributions to music, the arts and culture in Montreal and elsewhere in Quebec and Canada, and as chairman of the Conseil des arts de Montréal and chairman of the Orchestre Métropolitain where he hired Yannick Nézet-Séguin as conductor at the age of 26 years old.

The Prix Goyer value is $125,000:
– $50,000 in cash – being $5,000 from the $25,000 contribution from each Mécénat Caprice donor
– $50,000 from noncerto: by way of production, distribution and marketing of 18 classical music videos
– $13,500 from Matthias Maute: by way of contribution of a new composition
– $11,500 from an anonymousfamily (entrepreneur): in the formof business coaching

Selection criteria and eligibility:
– The Collaborative Emerging Artist Award is by invitation only as selected by judges, similar to the Gilmore Artist Award, following a confidential non-competitive selection process whereby “… six-member Artistic Advisory Committee appraises the nominees over a period of time and assesses their musicianship and performing abilities through numerous performances under varying conditions. Throughout the process, candidates for the Award are unaware they are under consideration”.
– Potential candidates are emerging artists aged under 33 1/3 as of December 30 of the year prior to selection.
– Each candidate must show a broad diversity of successful musical collaborations with other musicians and ensembles and have performed with Canadian and internationally established artists.
– Each candidate must have already been recognized as one of Canada’s most promising musicians by other music organizations such as Jeunesses Musicales Canada, Prix d’Europe, Montreal International Music Competition, OSM Manulife Competition, Canadian Music Competition, Sylva Gelber Awards, Eckhardt- Gramatté Competition, “Révélations de l’année de Radio-Canada”, CBC’s 30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30, or Canada Council for the Arts.
