WITH THE MOSCOW VIRTUOSI & VLADIMIR SPIVAKOV
WITH ISRAELI CELLO PRODIGY DANIELLE AKTA

“Outstanding portrayals…a crystal-clear coloratura voice…. Singing beautifully…with secure technique and ethereal high notes, she seemed not merely to play, but to become Violetta.” – Raymond Stults, Moscow Times, reviewing soprano Hibla Gerzmava in La Traviata

“Perfectly balanced, dynamically expressive, with a warm swell in the phrasing, and a finish that’s as smooth as silk.” – Colin Eatock, reviewing The Moscow Virtuosi in Toronto

The performance takes place at Roy Thomson Hall, 60 Simcoe Street.     Tickets, $55-135, are now available at the box office, from www.roythomson.com or by calling 416-872-4255.

Show One producer Svetlana Dvoretsky is eagerly awaiting the return of the Moscow Virtuosi.  “The orchestra and Spivakov come back here every couple of years,” she said, “always to a sold-out hall, with a fresh, new program that brings the audience to its feet!  And they have introduced us to dazzling guest artists!”

Their program features a stunning array of favorite operatic arias, and orchestral “romances” and classics.  It will also showcase 14-year-old Israeli cello prodigy, Danielle Akta, also in her first Canadian performance.

HIBLA GERZMAVA, Soprano (www.hibla.ru/en)

“Hibla Gerzmava made a glorious Covent Garden debut as Tatyana, warmly expressive in the Letter Scene and full-voiced and tonally steady throughout” – Rupert Christiansen, The Telegraph

Hibla Gerzmava made history when in 1994 she became the first singer and the only woman ever to earn the rarely awarded Grand Prize in the International Tchaikovsky Competition. She has gone on to entrance the opera world.

Metropolitan Opera audiences have delighted to her voice and portrayals in Don Giovanni, Otello, Turandot, and Les Contes D’Hoffmann.  She has sung Mimì (La bohème) at the Rome Opera and Bavarian State Opera; Vitellia (La clemenza di Tito) at the Vienna State Opera and Opéra National de Paris; and Liu in the Mariinsky Theatre’s Turandot in Japan – in addition to numerous oratorio performances and recitals in Europe, the U.S. and Japan.  This year alone, the Abkhazian-Russian singer has sung or is about to appear in the title roles of Verdi’s La Traviata at the Bolshoi Theatre; Donizetti’s Anna Bolena at La Scala; and Lucia di Lammermoor at her home theatre, the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre. Another of her major roles is Elisabetta in Verdi’s Don Carlos, which she will sing at the Opera Bastille in Paris, amongst many other operatic and concert appearances.

“Rich-toned, deeply felt reading” – Jeremy Eichler, the Boston Globe
“Fiery precision and sharply defined phrases” – New York Times

It has been said that the Moscow Virtuosi is one big instrument.

A top winner of the Tchaikovsky and Montreal International competitions, Vladimir Spivakov has led the ensemble since 1979, when he brought together fellow prizewinners, key orchestral players, and other friends and associates to form an exquisite chamber orchestra like no other.

Some 100 concerts annually have taken it to London’s Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall, the Vienna Musikverein, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, New York’s Carnegie Hall and other venues in Europe, North America, China, Japan, Israel, Turkey and remote corners of the former Soviet Union. Besides the North American tour with Hibla Gerzmava and Danielle Akta, this year’s itinerary includes performances in Moscow, London’s Barbican Hall, and the European Parliament in Brussels.  Its recordings, on the Melodya and Capriccio labels, range from Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart and Rossini to 20thcentury greats Bartok, Arvo Pärt, Shostakovich, Schnittke and Shchedrin.

Cellist Danielle Akta (www.danielle-akta.com), at 14, has already performed internationally with orchestras and in solo recitals in many countries.  The recipient of numerous awards, she has been aided in her development through a grant from the Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation.  Born in Israel into a family of musicians, Danielle began to play the cello at age 4 at her own request, after listening to a recording of Jacqueline du Pré.  She is currently studying at the Barenboim-Said Music Akademie in Berlin.
