The Highlands Opera Studio in Haliburton has an exciting season lined up this summer. See one of two (or both!) concerts of selections from opera and Broadway August 9 and 12, or catch up with past alumni on August 23. The mainstage production this year is Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte (August 27, 29, 30, and 31), but don’t miss out on the premiere of Barbara Croall’s opera Wiikondiwin in a semi-staged performance on August 19 (read an interview with the creator). The 30th season of the Brott Music Festival in and around Hamilton (June 21–August 17) opens with Srul Irving Glick’s Psalm for Orchestra and Mozart’s Symphony No. 46 and Requiem. Other highlights include Gino Quilico (July 9), Bizet’s Carmen (July 13), and Alexandre Da Costa (July 20). The festival closes on August 17 with a Choral Gala featuring excerpts from Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, and Orff’s Carmina Burana. www.brottmusic.com

This season, the Summer Opera Lyric Theatre 2017 Opera Workshop will stage 4 great operas: Bizet’s Carmen, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, and a double bill of John Beckwith’s Night Blooming Cereus and Michael Rose’s A Northern Lights Dream. Parry Sound’s Festival of the Sound runs July 21 to August 13 and features many exciting concerts. Highlights include a Canada at 150 birthday party with the Canadian Brass and the New Zealand String Quartet (July 22), the Trinity College Choir (July 25), a concert in honour of Glenn Gould and his 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations by Stewart Goodyear (August 3), they Gryphon trio (August 9 and 10), and Boris Brott’s National Academy Orchestra in a Last Night at the Proms-style concert (August 12). To close the festival: a traditional English Tea with Russell Braun, Gene DiNovi, and Carolyn Maule (August 13). www.festivalofthesound.ca
