The Sainte-Anne Singers, directed by Margo Keenan, celebrate 30 years of a cappella music with a concert entitled “Chants et chandelles” on April 29 and 30. Founded in 1987 by Keenan, the group has developed into an auditioned chamber choir of 26 voices, with an eclectic and challenging repertoire. The ensemble has won numerous awards, most recently in 2015 in the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. Singers hail from the West Island, Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Montreal, and beyond.

In honour of Montreal’s 375th and Canada’s 150th, the programme features music from Quebec and across Canada by composers such as Mark Sirett, Laura Hawley, Matthew Emery, and Guillaume Boulay.

The choir is honoured to present the premiere of an arrangement, by Guy Demers, of “Belle, embarquez” by Mes Aïeux. This was commissioned by Radio Canada specially for the Sainte-Anne Singers, who were one of 19 choirs from across the country chosen to contribute to an upcoming CD of francophone Canadian music.  The project was launched by ICI Musique animator Françoise Davoine to celebrate the country’s 150th anniversary.

A number of the Sainte-Anne Singers are accomplished composers and arrangers. In this concert, the group will perform the Quebec premiere of the award-winning “How Sweet the Moonlight” by tenor Martin Fairbank. Celtic musician and soprano Sarah Burnell has arranged a Canadian favourite, “Frobisher Bay”, which will be performed by the men of the choir.

As a highlight of the April 29th concert only, some 30 former members of the group will add their voices to a two-choir version of “You Are the New Day”, as well as a second piece featuring the Swahili words, ‘’Sing songs forever”.

“Chants et chandelles” will be presented on Saturday, April 29th, 8:00 PM, at Union Church, 24 Maple Avenue, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. The audience is invited to share birthday cake afterwards with the singers. In honour of Montreal’s 375th anniversary, there will be a second performance, presented free of charge, on Sunday, April 30th, 2:00 PM, at Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, 400 St. Paul E., Montreal.

At both concerts, audience members may purchase the Sainte-Anne Singers’ new CD, “Nuits d’hiver”, recorded in celebration of the group’s 30th anniversary.
