Toute sa vie, Johann Sebastian Bach fut fasciné par l’opéra mais il ne composa jamais pour la scène. Ce furent ses Passions qui remplacèrent dans son œuvre le théâtre lyrique. De par sa haute tension dramatique, la Passion selon Saint Matthieu, monumentale et infiniment touchante, se prête parfaitement à une mise en espace et qui pourrait mieux la réaliser qu’Alain Gauthier, ce brillant metteur en scène d’opéra.

Opera fascinated Johann Sebastian Bach his whole life but the closest he ever came to writing for the theatre are his Passions. With its high drama, the monumental and endlessly moving St. Matthew Passion lends itself perfectly to a semistaged rendering and who could achieve this better than Alain Gauthier, the brilliant opera stage director.
