Elijah, un oratorio de Felix Mendelssohn

Le prophète Elijah fascine encore aujourd’hui avec son parcours ponctué de miracles flamboyants. Figure d’autorité qui parle au nom du Dieu d’Israël, il nous transporte dans une histoire où plusieurs se disputent la légitimité de leurs dieux. Les solistes, l’orchestre et le chœur sont en constant dialogue dans cet oratorio des plus appréciés du répertoire romantique. Mendelssohn a su tiré profit des proportions mythiques de la trame dramatique. La création d’Elijah eut lieu le 26 août 1846, avec Mendelssohn lui-même au bâton, devant une salle comble au Birmingham Town Hall. Ce fut un immense succès : quatre chœurs et quatre airs furent joués en rappel !

Elijah, by Felix Mendelssohn, is a large-scale oratorio scored for four soloists a full symphony orchestra, and a large chorus. Mendelssohn, particularly drawn by the prophet’s mythic journey, uses Biblical episodes to produce intensely dramatic scenes: the resurrection of a dead youth, the bringing of rain to parched Israel, the ascension of Elijah on a fiery chariot into heaven, and a contest of the gods, in which Jehovah consumes an offered sacrifice in a column of fire. The first performance, conducted by Mendelssohn himself, took place on August 26, 1846, before a packed Birmingham Town Hall. It was an unprecedented success, with encores of four choruses and four arias!
